TANGGAPAN FISIOLOGIS DAN PERTUMBUHAN BIBIT KELAPA SAWIT (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) TERHADAP CEKAMAN MANGAN

Abstract: ABSTRACT The research objectives were 1) to determine the responses of oil palm seedlings to manganese (Mn) stress on main nursery stage, 2) to determine the effects of Mn stress on the nutrient uptake of oil palm seedlings, and 3) to determine the critical threshold of Mn on oil palm seedlings. The research was arranged in a single factor of Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), with three blocks as replications. The factor was Mn stress, consisting of five concentrations of Mn, namely 0, 300, 600, 900, and 1200 ppm. The source of Mn was manganese sulphate (MnSO4). The observations were done on several variables of microclimate characters, soil chemical characters, concentration of Mn in the tissue, and physiological and growth characters of oil palm seedlings on the main nursery stage. Data were analyzed with Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 5% levels, and continued with the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test if there were differences among treatments. The relationships between concentration of Mn in the soil with tissue Fe concentration and uptake, physiological characters, and growth of oil palm seedlings were determined with regression analysis. Meanwhile, the relationships patterns among variables were determined with correlation analysis. The results showed that physiological and growth responses of oil palm seedlings on the main nursery stage to Mn stress were increased of tissue Mn concentration and uptake, decreased tissue Fe concentration and uptake, decreased leaf chlorophyll content, decreased width of stomatal opening, decreased root surface area, and increased root dry weight. There were negative correlations between available Mn concentration in the planting media with tissue Fe concentration and uptake. An increase in available Mn concentration in the planting media was followed by a decrease in tissue Fe concentration and uptake on the oil palm seddlings. The critical threshold of Mn on oil palm seedlings in the main nursery stage based on root dry weight and surface area, plant height, leaf number, and stem diameter was 500 ppm. The availabilities of Mn in soil >500 ppm were potentially inhibits physiological and growth characters of oil palm seedlings on the main nursery stage due to Mn toxicity. Intisari: INTISARI TANGGAPAN FISIOLOGIS DAN PERTUMBUHAN BIBIT KELAPA SAWIT (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) TERHADAP CEKAMAN MANGAN INDRA KURNIAWAN PUTRA 12/335010/PN/12990 Penelitian bertujuan untuk 1) mengetahui tanggapan kelapa sawit terhadap cekaman mangan (Mn), 2) mengetahui pengaruh cekaman Mn terhadap serapan hara tanaman kelapa sawit, dan 3) menentukan ambang kritis Mn pada bibit kelapa sawit. Percobaan lapangan disusun dalam Rancangan Acak Kelompok Lengkap (RAKL) faktor tunggal dengan tiga blok sebagai ulangan. Perlakuan yang diuji adalah konsentrasi Mn, terdiri dari lima konsentrasi yaitu 0, 300, 600, 900, dan 1200 ppm. Sumber Mn adalah mangan sulfat (MnSO4). Variabel yang diamati meliputi karakter iklim mikro, karakter kimia media tanam, konsentrasi dan serapan Mn jaringan, karakter fisiologis, dan pertumbuhan bibit kelapa sawit. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis varians (ANOVA) taraf kepercayaan 95% dan dilanjutkan dengan uji beda nyata terkecil (BNT) jika terdapat beda nyata antar perlakuan. Hubungan antara konsentrasi Mn yang diberikan dengan konsentrasi dan serapan Fe, karakter fisiologis, dan pertumbuhan bibit kelapa sawit ditentukan dengan analisis regresi. Sedangkan hubungan antar variabel pengamatan ditentukan dengan analisis korelasi. Hasil penelitian memberikan informasi bahwa tanggapan fisiologis dan pertumbuhan bibit kelapa sawit terhadap cekaman Mn meliputi peningkatan kandungan dan serapan Mn jaringan, penurunan kandungan dan serapan Fe jaringan, penurunan kandungan klorofil daun, penurunan lebar bukaan stomata, penurunan luas permukaan akar, dan peningkatan bobot kering akar. Terdapat korelasi negatif antara konsentrasi Mn tersedia dalam media tanam dengan konsentrasi dan serapan Fe jaringan tanaman, kenaikan konsentrasi Mn tersedia dalam media tanam diikuti oleh penurunan konsentrasi dan serapan Fe jaringan tanaman. Ambang kritis Mn pada bibit kelapa sawit di fase pembibitan utama mendasarkan pada indikator bobot kering dan luas permukaan akar, tinggi tanaman, jumlah daun, dan diameter batang adalah 500 ppm, konsentrasi Mn tersedia dalam media tanam >500 ppm berpotensi menghambat aktivitas fisiologis serta pertumbuhan karena Mn mulai bersifat meracun.
