Gold nanoparticles were used to detect Cr(VI) by utilizing a characteristic property called surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of AuNPs. The changes in SPR and color of AuNPs due to the presence of Cr(VI) were used as the basis for determining the concentration of Cr(VI) using the digital image colorimetry (KGD) method. Gold nanoparticles were synthesized at room temperature from HAuCl4 using the reducing agent Lascorbic acid. PABA-chelated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs- PABA) were synthesized by adding PABA solution into AuNPs. The synthesized AuNPs-PABA were analyzed using UV-Vis spectrometer and characterized using Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). The PABA-capped gold nanoparticles were then contacted with Cr(VI) and the color changes that occurred in AuNPs-PABA were analyzed using a UV-Vis spectrometer and photographed for the KGD method. The result of determination of Cr(VI) concentration in a sample of a chrome plating workshop wastewater using spectrophotometer UV-Vis and KGD method gave a comparable result, 153.42 ± 14.46 mg/L for the UV-Vis spectrophotometer and 159.00 ± 10.56 mg/L for the KGD analysis. KGD analysis has better sensitivity compared to UV-Vis, this is indicated by the LoD and LoQ value of KGD of 0.0212 mg/L and 0.0642 mg/L, while those of UV-Vis are 0.1946 mg/L and 0.5899 mg/L. From the results of this study it can be concluded that the KGD method has enormous potential to be developed as an easy, fast and environmentally friendly AuNPs-based Cr(VI) detection method.
